Etching, Materiality and Living Surfaces

Eleanor Havsteen-Franklin's experimental printmaking explores organic forms, materiality and the interconnectedness of human and nonhuman life. Drawing on botanical and biological structures, her etchings bring intentional marks into dialogue with unpredictable material processes. Through techniques including foul biting on copper plates and stitching into Japanese paper, she creates tactile surfaces evocative of skin, plant tissue and other living structures. The transformation of etched lines into three-dimensional forms challenges distinctions between drawing, printmaking and sculpture.
